Money Talk presents an interview with English language specialist and TV’s Countdown word expert, Susie Dent. It seems the charity Guide Dogs has been struggling to recruit describers for the 360,000 people in the UK who are registered blind or partially sighted. Their study, “Powers of Description”, demonstrates that 50% of us lack confidence in our ability to describe a TV show or even give directions. UK schools, which for a while were reluctant to correct spelling or grammar, have turned out generations who cannot conjugate verbs (we done that, we was here), who use the word “like” as punctuation and have no idea how to lay out a business letter or CV. This leaves employers with the unenviable task of picking up the slack.
Susie and Simon explore the importance of using language effectively as how well you communicate can have a direct bearing on the sort of jobs that may be open to you.
